>> How to get the best handwriting recognition accuracy
1) Use boxed fields whenever possible
Boxed Fields allow the maximum handwriting recognition accuracy. Cursive Fields are NOT appropriate if you want to get an acceptable level of accuracy
2) Use the appropriate handwriting recognition parameter
- For letter-only fields, use “Capital Letters” whenever possible
- For Digit-only fields, use “Digits”
- or mixed letters & digits / symbols, use “Letters, Digits & Symbols” but bear in mind that this introduces more ambiguities : the recognizer will have a hard time choosing between a 1 (digit “one”), a capital I(letter i) and a lowercase l (letter L) (1 I l ), for instance..
3) Make your boxes as big as possible
When the boxes are big, users tend to want to fill them (which is good). This way you obtain the best ink data. If your boxes are small, users will have to write small, often distorting their handwriting and therefore diminishing the handwriting recognition accuracy.
4) Do not use cursive fields for critical data !
People often have a hard time understanding why cursive (natural) handwriting recognition cannot be used more often. To understand why, it is important to understand how cursive handwriting recognition works :
Cursive Recognition uses lexicons in order to “segment” the ink signal into various letters. This lexicon can be either provided by the Handwriting Recognition Engine provider (in our case, Microsoft) or can be “custom built”.
Cursive fields can be used in only 2 cases :
- For the recognition of “natural text”, where the expected words will be common words used in your language (ex:”The sun is shining, and the little birds are chirping”), cursive fields will work fine with the “Natural Language Text” parameter
- When the number of possible words is limited (used in conjunction with the “Wordlist” parameter, appropriately filled-in).
One good example is a form in an automotive context, where the car brand has to be filled in. A cursive field can be used with great success, provided you type in the list of available brand in your country in the “Word List” parameter field
Names, First Names, Addresses, Postal Codes, etc will NOT be recognized accurately using cursive fields !
Make sure to properly configure the language in the Form’s properties. If the recognizer is expecting English and you are writing in Spanish, it will not work and produce very, very poor results.
